 Covered Bridges
Spanning the American Landscape
Few engineering structures—indeed, few historic structures of any kind—captivate the American imagination like covered wood bridges. Simultaneously sturdy and beautiful, covered bridges evoke the calm of a simpler age far from today’s bustling freeways. They are the subject of countless books, photographs, and paintings, and appear prominently in feature films, such as The Bridges of Madison County. Romance and nostalgia, however, often mask the substantial engineering achievements these bridges represent. It is precisely this embodiment of both the cultural and the technological that gives covered wood bridges their widespread appeal and understated significance. Covered bridges remain one of the most enduring and endearing symbols of the transportation landscape.

 About Herman Bender – Herman Bender is an independent researcher with a background in geology (professional emphasis) and a technical field in industry. An approved historical consultant and amateur astronomer (45 years), he has been nationally and internationally published in the fields of archeoastronomy, petrofrom research, applied geophysics and cultural landscape studies. Through his company ASHCO (America Septen History COmpany), and a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization the Hanwakan Center for Prehistoric Astronomy, Cosmology and Cultural Landscape Studies, Inc., Mr. Bender provides cultural landscape and environmental surveys for comprehensive land planning purposes and preservation.

In Citizen's Garb: Southern Plains Native Americans, 1889–1891  The 53 photographs that comprise this exhibition, modern restrikes made from original glass negatives, were taken from 1889 to 1891 by the team of William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers. These enterprising businessmen set up shop in Purcell, Oklahoma, one of many towns that sprang up on former Indian lands.
